INSTRUMENTS REQUEST

Using musical instruments in sadhana practice is *not* a requirement. A bell, dorje and damaru may be used in Yumka sadhana practice. In Chod practice, a bell and dorje is also traditionally used together with a chod drum and kangling.

All instrument prices include Dharmata Foundation's cost for instruments, shipping from Nepal to the United States, along with customs, taxes and other fees, plus a small markup for damage or returns. Postage from the Bay Area to your local address may be added as well. If funds collected from members for instruments exceed costs, the excess will remain in Dharmata's general fund and will be used for operational costs, whether or not directly related to the Vajra Sangha.

NO DEPOSIT REQUIRED AT THIS TIME: You'll receive email regarding availability and total cost that includes postage within the US.

We'll do our best to fulfill requests with instruments on hand but note that numbers are limited. We appreciate your understanding if we are unable to fulfill your request.

If you don't find what your looking for, please feel free to reach out to vajrasangha.facilitators@gmail.com to be put in touch with a sangha member who has supplied instruments in the last few years.

A Note on Materials

  • Dehradun's expert craftspeople make it the preferred source for bells.
  • The sacred texts often mention Sengdeng, a hardwood, which is appreciated for its resonance and durability.
  • Wool-lined cases help to maintain proper humidity and preserve the wood.
  • Painted drum skins are economical, and avoid irregularities in quality. Cloudskin or mineralized drum skins are more breathable, and may be easier to maintain in the long run.
  • Brocade and decoration were selected for beauty and affordability.
  • Natural goat skin, shell, bone, and other animal products are used traditionally in most instruments.

You will be able to use these instruments for many years to come.
